Why a portfolio of my own?

I used to shoot on assignment. Priorities shift in life — today photography is a passionate hobby, not a business. That is exactly how I wanted to show it: no price list, no sales pressure, just the images. For me, the appeal lies in the opposite of what I deal with professionally every day. No AI, no prompting, no generated worlds — just an old SLR weighing about 1.3 kg and the one right moment. Yes, I know — you have to like that. ;-) MCS-PICTURES is the place where these images are allowed to stand in peace. Not as a stream, not as a feed, but as a curated portfolio that draws the eye to the single photo rather than to the mass.

How do you show photos without drowning them out?

A portfolio is built quickly — a good one is not. Before the first image went online, the real questions were on the table:

How much frame does a photo need — and at what point does design distract from the subject?
How do I arrange the images: by theme, by series, by feeling?
How much text can an image page take before the words become louder than the picture?
How do I keep the order in my own hands, without touching code every time?
And: how does the whole thing stay personal, instead of coming across like yet another polished stock-photo showcase?

Restraint as a design principle

The most important decision was what does not happen. No effects, no loud transitions, no overloaded navigation. Black, white and plenty of space — so the images carry the page, not the interface. Instead of hard-wiring everything, MCS-PICTURES runs on the same surface as my other projects: mcs-admin. The images are organised into sections — Portrait, Street, Nature and more — and I set the order myself by dragging, until the sequence feels right.

Each image is stored on import as an optimised webp, so the site stays fast despite large photos. The live preview shows the actual state of the site at all times. That way I do not curate blind but see immediately how a new order works — and only export once it sits. The portfolio is less „programmed" than tended: a place that grows with every new shot, without me having to rebuild it.

What the portfolio already shows

• Order I set myself: every image sequence sorted by dragging until the dramaturgy sits.
• Detail view per image: title and calm around it, so the subject can breathe.
• Reduced black-and-white design: the styling deliberately steps back behind the photos.
• Fast loading times: large shots as optimised webp, without visible loss of quality.
• Maintained live: add new images at any time and see them in the preview right away.

What comes next

• Filling new sections: Urban, Architecture and Travel are in place but still empty — waiting for the right shots, not for filler.
• Series instead of single images: connected picture sequences as a deliberately told story, not just a gallery.
• The thought behind the image: a sentence or two on selected shots — where, when, why — without disturbing the calm of the page.

Seeing instead of generating

Professionally, I move every day in a world of AI, prompts and generated interfaces. Photography is my counterweight to that: here, nothing can be generated. You have to be there, wait, look — and release the shutter at the right moment. MCS-PICTURES holds on to these moments, as plainly as possible. Because some things do not get better when you layer more technology on top. You just have to see them — in detail.
